Kearny Public Library Vacation Reading Club 2010
Pre-K to Grade 5: June 15-Aug. 13
"Make a Splash" is the theme of the Children's Room summer reading challenge for preschool through fifth grade.
Take the summer reading challenge at the Kearny Public Library. The challenge began on Tuesday, June 15 at the Main Library, 318 Kearny Ave., and also at the Branch Library, 759 Kearny Ave.
The rules are: Preschool through 5th grades keep track of summer reading for an award and prizes. Children may read on their own, be read to, or read to someone else. Books do not have to come from the library and all reading counts. Keep track of books you read (skinny books) or the amount of time you spend reading ( fatter books.) Return your book log in the Children's Room at 318 Kearny Ave. no later than Aug. 13 to receive an award and a special prize.
Activities for July
Make a Splash Art with Mrs. Mills. Age 3+ Tuesdays or Fridays as follows:
Tuesday, July 6 and Tuesday, July 13; Friday July 23 and Friday July 30. At 318 Kearny Ave.
Make a Splash Bookmark Contest Age 5+ 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 27-Friday, July 30 at 318 Kearny Ave. Come to the Children's Room and design a summer bookmark. One bookmark per person.
Wednesday Family Movies at 4 p.m. beginning July 7: At 318 Kearny Ave. The Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and The Living Sea. August movies to be announced.
Game Day at the Branch Library every Tuesday in August at 2 p.m. at The Branch Library at 759 Kearny Avenue. For ages 5-12.
Professional Magician Mark Zacharia will be appearing at the Main Library at 318 Kearny Avenue for one night only, Tuesday, August 10th at 7 p.m., with his workshop: "Magic of the Mind." Here you will be entertained with several performance pieces from Mark's professional repertoire--then, you will learn exactly how to perform them yourself! No special gimmicks or prior knowledge are required to participate in this workshop. (Inexpensive magic sets will be available for sale after the workshop.) So don't miss this chance to see professional magician Mark Zacharia seemingly read your mind. We predict you'll love it! For Ages 10 and Up. Refreshments will be provided.
Strictly Improv, Free Theater Workshops for Children
Before the Summer is over, act out at the Kearny Public Library! In August the library will host the West Hudson Council for the Arts for Strictly Improv, two free theater workshops for children. Students will be introduced to acting & the world of the theater. They will also get the opportunity to create their own characters & express themselves through solo & group improvisation.
There will be two teachers on hand, each running their own class. One will be for ages 5 – 7 & the other will be for ages 8 & up. We will accept 12 students for each class. Please call the Kearny Public Library Children’s Room at (201) 998-2666 to reserve a spot or if you would like more information. The workshops will be held at the Main Library, located at 318 Kearny Ave., on Thursday, August 19 & Thursday, August 26 from 4:00 – 5:00 PM.

Special Interest collection
The Friends of the Kearny New Jersey Free Public Library is pleased to announce the completion of a donation project at the Kearny Main Library, located at 318 Kearny Avenue. The newly donated Special Interest collection contains books for children with special needs and disabilities. Many of the titles received the Dolly Gray award for outstanding children’s literature. The Dolly Gray Award for Children's Literature in Developmental Disabilities was initiated in 2000 to recognize authors, illustrators, and publishers of high quality fictional children's books that appropriately portray individuals with developmental disabilities. Young readers will find the books’ characters to have special disabilities just like they may have themselves, ranging from ADHD, anxiety disorders, Asperger syndrome, autism, Down syndrome, dyslexia, hearing and sight impairments, OCD, wheel chair confinement and other challenges.

Summer Storytimes begin on Tuesday, June 22, and Thursday, June 24th.
Tuesday Storytime will continue through Tuesday, July 27th and Thursday storytimes will continue through July 29th.
