Special Interest collection

The Friends of the Kearny New Jersey Free Public Library is pleased to announce the completion of a donation project at the Kearny Main Library, located at 318 Kearny Avenue.  The newly donated Special Interest collection contains books for children with special needs and disabilities.  Many of the titles received the Dolly Gray award for outstanding children’s literature.  The Dolly Gray Award for Children's Literature in Developmental Disabilities was initiated in 2000 to recognize authors, illustrators, and publishers of high quality fictional children's books that appropriately portray individuals with developmental disabilities. Young readers will find the books’ characters to have special disabilities just like they may have themselves, ranging from ADHD, anxiety disorders, Asperger syndrome, autism, Down syndrome, dyslexia, hearing and sight impairments, OCD, wheel chair confinement and other challenges.

Download Audiobooks and eBooks from Listen NJ

ListenNJ now includes eBooks! With your Kearny Library card, you can download audiobooks to your personal PC, laptop, or PDA or eBooks for your Sony® Reader or Barnes and Noble nook™. Go to ListenNJ.com where you can take a guided tour, see what devices work with ListenNJ, and check out an audiobook or eBook.

eBooks can be read on a PC or Mac® using free reader software called Adobe® Digital Editions. eBooks can also be transferred to popular e-reading devices like the Sony® Reader and the Barnes & Noble nook™. Many eBooks feature reflowable text which allows a user to resize the text and alter the display to fit any screen size. The Sony® Reader and the nook™ are designed to look and feel like a book and are great for users on the go. The devices feature E INK technology, a screen that reads like paper so it’s easy on the reader’s eyes.

To check out eBooks and audiobooks, users need a valid Kearny Library card, computer, and Internet connection. Once downloaded, digital media can be enjoyed on a computer and transferred to popular devices such as MP3 players, iPods®, Smartphones, and more. At the end of the lending period, titles automatically expire and are returned to the collection.

ListenNJ is a project of the Infolink and Central Jersey Regional Library Cooperatives.
